How in-hand salary is calculated
In-hand salary = Gross salary − (Employee PF + Employee ESI + Professional Tax + TDS and other deductions)
- Gross salary is Basic + DA + HRA + other allowances.
- Employee PF is 12% of Basic + DA, usually on wages up to ₹15,000.
- Employee ESI is 0.75% of gross wages, only when gross is ₹21,000 a month or less.
- Professional Tax depends on your state, and TDS on your income tax.
The employer also pays 12% PF (of which up to ₹1,250 goes to the pension scheme), EDLI and PF admin charges of 0.5% each, and 3.25% ESI where it applies. Adding these to gross salary gives the monthly CTC.
Frequently Asked Questions
CTC (cost to company) is everything the employer spends on you, including the employer's PF and ESI contributions. Gross salary is your monthly pay before deductions: Basic, DA, HRA and allowances. In-hand salary is what reaches your bank account after employee PF, ESI, Professional Tax, TDS and other deductions.
Employees contribute 12% of Basic + DA to PF. Many employers calculate PF on wages up to ₹15,000, so the employee deduction is at most ₹1,800 a month; some calculate it on the full Basic + DA. The employer contributes another 12%.
ESI applies when gross monthly wages are ₹21,000 or less. The employee pays 0.75% of gross wages and the employer pays 3.25%. Above ₹21,000, ESI is normally not deducted.
No. Professional Tax is set by each state. Some states, such as Rajasthan and Delhi, do not levy it; others such as Maharashtra and Karnataka deduct up to about ₹200 a month. Enter your state's amount in the calculator.
Income tax (TDS) depends on your annual income, tax regime and investments, so it is not calculated automatically. Enter your monthly TDS in “TDS and other deductions” to include it.
